In times of transition, it is difficult to predict when  the problems will come to an end. After the global economic slump and aftershocks of so called “war on terror” all the jobs including chemical engineering jobs became much difficult to find than past. In the chemical industry, which along with many other related industries, has shed chemical engineering jobs and left many chemical engineers to readjust their targets.

There is some hope among chemical engineering jobs seekers in the industry — companies have started to hire again! — but the slight surge of hope is diluted by the outsourcing of jobs to workers in foreign countries, as well as  serious downfall in U.S. chemical industry.But hope is rising again!!

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics around 29,000 (local stats) chemical engineers were hired in engineering sector. Employment rate escalation was promising with 3.1%, higher than previous year. But in 2010 due to international economic crisis there was small slump in jobs availability and wage amount. 2010 Salary Survey: Clouds of Concern are shedding

Chemical industry think-tanks believe that they’ve weathered the worst of the economic storm, according to results of Chemical Processing  2010 Salary and Job Satisfaction survey. This year, 52% (860) of respondents are concerned about job security and 48% (778) are not  compared to 58% who were and 42% who were not in the 2009.

Pay Raises, Bonuses Drop!

For the first time since the survey was made in 2005, the average salaries published by respondents got the shortfall — from $107,804 in 2009 to $97,554 this year. Until now, average salaries have steadily increased which is promising. In 2005, the average salary was $85,234; in 2006, $89,690; in 2007, $90,038; and in 2008, $95,231. Small percentage declines in those reporting annual incomes within the $115,000 to $125,000 pay ranges and increases in those who are earning $80,000 to $95,000 account for the decrease in the average salaries reported.

Young engineers for hire

One factor that has become increasingly important in chemical engineering job security is the number of years of experience a candidate has in the industry. “I’ve seen a pickup in the guts of chemical manufacturing,” says Billy Price, a recruiter and owner of Engineering Profiles, Pensacola, Fla. He says there is rise in demand for chemical engineers who have 3 to 5 years of experience “It’s gotten so lean because of cost constraints that they’re [employers] working folks to death by adding more responsibility,” he says. But many companies have started to realized that they can’t continue to function with such truncate staffs, and have begun to hire again. “That to me is more of a sign that things are coming back,”

This is not necessarily good news for those who have tons of experience and who are used to getting larger amount of dollars than those with just a few years of experience. He says, some companies have unspoken age requirements. “When you refer candidates that are qualified and they pass on them, that’s an indication,” he says.

The hope is that the economy will increase chemical company revenues, creating a more favorable hiring situation for those with years of experience, as well as the freshers.

That doesn’t mean that the job market will rebound to the prosperous levels of the late 1990s in recent future. “Companies are being more selective,” Price says. “They have the luxury of a large labor stock and they are taking their time and waiting for the right candidate — it’s frustrating.” Some companies are taking up to a year to fill a position. “Companies are not willing to commit,” he says. “They need the help, but they’ll drag it [the hiring process] on for a year.” But, he has noticed a slight increase in urgency compared to just four to five months ago. “You can tell by the way companies respond — there has been a increase of the pace,” he says.

On campus Recruiting:
Recruiting young chemical engineers from college campuses has shown some promise. Although Price doesn’t dabble in placement of recent college graduates, he keeps in touch with students who have had above-average academic careers. “Many grads are going back to school because they can’t find a chemical engineering jobs,” he says.

But if you happen to be one of those lucky ones who has laid a path to gainful employment right out of college, the news is good: salaries are on the rise. Ernest Walker, assistant director of career services for Georgia Tech in Atlanta, says chemical engineering graduates are earning more money now than in 2002. The average salary recorded by the school that year was $48,447, compared to the $52,363 that students reported in 2003. Although Georgia Tech did not have figures for master’s-level graduates, its Ph.D. graduates were making more money as well: $85,000 in spring 2003 versus an average of $80,000 in spring 2002.

However, the salary increase revelations are tempered by a decrease in the number of chemical engineering jobs being offered to grads. The school reported its students were offered and accepted 51 jobs in 2002, but there were just 40 in 2003. “It’s more difficult now,” Walker says. “For those students who do a good chemical engineering jobs search, they’re not getting the three to four offers we were seeing in the 1990s. Companies are not recruiting in volumes that they did in the past.”

But job seekers have to take into account this reality: Many chemical engineering companies are not expanding, nor are they installing new plants. “We’re hurting a bit,” Price says. “The chemical business is shrinking. A lot of companies in the United States won’t be able to compete within a few years. There will be a lot of foreign competition.”
